World Youth International Newsletter March 2009
A word from our CEO Rob Kalka...
Welcome to our March Newsletter. We hope you're happy and well. The last few months at WYI have been exciting, with continued positive outcomes. Our Overseas Action groups have recently returned from Kenya, Cambodia and Nepal where they successfully completed desperately needed community infrastructure projects. In addition, we have many individuals currently volunteering overseas to provide valuable community development assistance.
We welcome back Kyla Raby from two months of world travels. Due to the growth of our programs, this week Kyla has been appointed as Overseas Service Project Manager (individual assignments). This will enable Jess Roberts to focus completely on managing Overseas Action Programs (group assignments).
Pedal Against Poverty is on again in April!! It's a great way for you, your friends and family to be active, have fun and support WYI's community development projects and volunteer programs. By getting involved, you're actively helping WYI build its capacity to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Now is the time to register. Go for it! WYI doesn't want to be world's biggest, but is striving to be world's best! I think we continue to make great progress.

52 young volunteers make their mark!
Over the last 4 months, World Youth International has sent a total of 52 volunteers on Overseas Action Programs around the world. The volunteers were split across rural communities in Kenya, Cambodia and Nepal, and the results they achieved were just incredible! The Overseas Action Program is a volunteer program designed to give participants a hands on role building sustainable structures in desperately poor communities. Although none of the volunteers had any construction experience, they worked extremely hard with the help of local labourers and have made a huge difference.
We are very proud of their achievements and we want to share them with you! Please click here to read a summary of each program's achievements and see some photos from their amazing experiences!

Jazz in the Park 2009 "The Good Guys" 10th annual Jazz in the Park went off with a bang! The 43 degree temperature didn't deter our guests, with an attendance of over 330... including some who flew in from Sydney and Darwin!
On this very warm, still night in a perfect parklands setting (including the welcome return of water to Rymill Lake), guests enjoyed delicious canapes whilst sipping on fine wines from Padthaway Estate and Pirramimma Wines and a great selection of beers from SA Brewing. All this, whilst being entertained by the up beat tunes of Marmalade Fiesta... and there was "a touch of magic" also happening amongst the crowd!

Introducing our new Team Leaders!
Congratulations to our two new team leaders Miss Sarah Ghan and Mr Alex Acworth! They have been selected out of an exceptional pool of candidates to lead our Overseas Action Programs in June this year. We wish them well in the lead up to this great adventure!
SARAH GHAN - Team Leader Kenya June 2009
Sarah has always had a long-term interest in cross-cultural immersion, with a particular focus on Asia. After graduating from a combined law and commerce degree in 1999 in Adelaide, she worked as a lawyer in Australia for several years, before moving to China (where she is currently located) to pursue a career in finance. Having spent over five years there, working in global firms such as KPMG and Goodman Group, Sarah has gained an invaluable range of professional skills, including those related to setting up businesses, project management and financial analysis. Living in China has also exposed her to the challenges of sustainable development in stark terms.... Click here to read more | |

"WOW!! I am constantly inspired by the massive differences that WYI make not only in the communities we visit, but also to each individual that sets out and gives their time, love and compassion to make WYI's programs possible. Thank you to everyone who contribute to this awesome organisation! Keep making a difference!" - Stephanie Donougher
Australian Central Community Lottery
WYI are fortunate to be a participant in the Australian Central Community Lottery. This is a fantastic opportunity for us to raise $10,000 to assist children and communities in Kenya and Nepal. As supporters of WYI, we need YOUR help to sell tickets! For people in South Australia and the Northern Territory, you can become a ticket seller, and for those living in the rest of the world you can help by buying some tickets and going into the draw to win some fantastic prizes! The lottery runs until 30 June 09, but if we can sell our 500 books quickly we may have an opportunity to source more books enabling us to raise additional funds for Kenya and Nepal. WYI will receive 100% of the ticket proceeds...what a great deal!
To order books or for more information please contact Clytie Shimmin (WYI Fundraising Committee) on 0402 461 475, or email Clytie.
