Library to Provide Much Needed Resources
There is great excitement in Adelaide and Kisumu at the moment as the long awaited library for Nyamasaria primary school (1200 students) is now underway and is expected to be completed within the next month or two. Much work has gone into achieving this and a group of skilled leadlighters have for some years been making small items (angels, stars, hearts) for lovely friends of World Youth International to sell in schools, shops and other outlets. After two classrooms, a few thousand secondhand story books (kindly donated, collected and delivered from around Adelaide and interstate) and a good number of bookshelves, the group finally got together enough money for the library and are all very excited about it. All items are made with donated coloured glass and it will continue to be an ongoing project as thousands more books are needed to stock the library as well as the money to post them.
The photograph is of regular Tuesday afternoon volunteer leadlighters (Chris, Paula and Sallie) working in Sallie's Studio. Examples of their leadlight hearts and stars are on the wall as well as angels in the making on the bench. Congratulations and thanks goes to everyone who has made this project possible!

Lifetime value in volunteering...
Brian Loffler, one of our friends at the New Internationalist Co-op has provided us with this wonderful thought:
"I was riding home in the bus the other night with tears brimming in my eyes. But it wasn't that I'd had a rotten day. These were actually tears of joy, and what prompted them made me think of you and your teams of volunteers at World Youth International. Let me explain. I was reading a wonderful new book by Grameen Foundation founding member and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Muhammad Yunus. Yunus is famous for his development of micro-credit schemes, but in the book he describes his next big idea, the implementation of social business. One of his first social business ventures is to produce yogurt for millions of impoverished people in Bangladesh through a partnership between Grameen and Danone. The success of the scheme depended heavily on the commitment of the Danone management team to making it work. My tears of joy came when Yunus described that the Danone's executive vice-president for Asia Pacific who would lead the project, had been a volunteer in Chile and India some twenty years prior. With that background he was totally committed to making the Grameen Danone social business a success. To me that was such a powerful reminder of the huge contribution global volunteering can make, not just currently, but in the future, when returned volunteers take up positions of power and responsibility and determine that directions taken by corporations and non-profits alike. So keep up the great work at World Youth International."
