WYI has been offering volunteer placements since 1988 and is proudly a not-for-profit, non-religious and non-political Australian based charity. We have sent away thousands of volunteers and proudly promote that we have an impeccable safety and security record. WYI is an approved charity, a signatory to ACFID (Australian Council for International Development) and is AusAID approved. We have flourished as an organisation through word of mouth and we rely on our volunteers sharing their experiences and outcomes with their peers.

We proudly promote ourselves as a non-religious organisation; one of only a few in Australia.

World Youth International has been operating successfully since 1988 and has sent away thousands of volunteers with an impeccable safety/security record. We are AusAID approved and are signatories to the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID). This is an appointed government body that ensures that non-government organisations like World Youth International are monitored effectively ensuring that they act in the best interests of their volunteers. It is also a legal avenue that volunteers can take if they feel that they have not received the services that were promised or if there was a serious concern around our duty of care.

World Youth International offers group programs (Overseas Action Program) to Kenya, Nepal, Peru and Cambodia. We offer individual projects (Overseas Service Program) to Kenya, Peru, Uganda and India. These programs run year round,
check here for dates.

When compared to other similar organisations, the one noticeable difference about our organisation is that we have fewer destination choices. At World Youth International, we focus on quality and not quantity and we ensure that our destinations provide our volunteers with the greatest possible volunteering experience. We have been working in countries like Nepal and Kenya since 1992 and have a large network of strategic local and international partners. This allows us to offer a range of in country placements for our volunteers and means we can focus more effort on making them successful for you.

Our Overseas Action Program is for adults 18-30. Our Overseas Service Program is for adults over the age of 18, there is no maximum age and our record stands at 72!

There are no formal qualifications required. However if you are looking to join a healthcare placement then copies of your qualifications must be sighted before we can confirm your placement.

We offer a range of professional placements on our Overseas Service Program. Please
contact one of our staff to see if we can offer you a placement in your specialised field.

WYI have only a few pre-requisites for volunteers wanting to do a program. Upon receipt of your application, WYI will process your application and contact you within 72 hours to set up a time for a phone conversation. The intention of the call will be to establish a relationship, assess suitability, provide information on the program and address any of your immediate questions. We would expect this call to take no longer than 40 minutes. WYI are looking to recruit volunteers who have the ability to work within a team environment. Participants must be flexible, adaptable, have a good state of health and have great communication skills. Applicants will be notified of their suitability at the conclusion of their phone call. If your application is unsuccessful, WYI will refund your application fee.

No, in all cases you will be provided with language lessons during your initial country orientation. We strongly recommend that you participate in some language training at your local TAFE before departing though.

When travelling to Peru on our Overseas Service Program, we request that all volunteers have extensive Spanish training before they arrive in Peru as English is not a common language here, Volunteers who do not speak Spanish tend to struggle on their placements. In order to have a placement that truly impacts the community knowledge of Spanish is very important.

On average, we recommend a minimum of 6 months when applying to avoid disappointment. If all program positions have been filled, you will have the option to be placed on a waiting list in case a spot becomes available or you can choose another program all together.

We accept applications up to 2 years in advance. Often dates won't be advertised that far in advance but dates will reflect the dates from the year prior. The 2 main advantages of applying in advance is that you will receive the current advertised prices (as they are revised and often increased annually) and it allows you to pay off your program fee in much smaller increments.

Generally 2 months is the minimum time frame but we have processed applications in just 6 weeks. It will take an enormous commitment from your side and you will be required to pay your program fee in full upfront after you have been interviewed and accepted.

Yes, you can apply outside of Australia for any of our programs. All fees quoted are in AUD.

The minimum number required to run an Overseas Action Program is 5 and we will accept up to 12 participants.

Our Overseas Service Program is an individual placement which offers a high level of independence but with the support of our in country staff. There are no minimum numbers for this program.

All projects selected by WYI are community driven, sustainable development projects. Applications from within the community are submitted to WYI for review and appraisal. If proposals are in alignment with our development model, we will proceed with the project. For a project to be considered, they must be in the fields of income generation, environmental, education or health care. Project reviews are completed over the following year to ensure the ongoing success of the project.

You can choose to combine both the Overseas Action Program (OAP) and the Overseas Service Program (OSP) into one at an additional expense. Many volunteers choose to combine programs and it has proven to be very successful over the years. To combine programs, you must be aged between 18-30 years and you must commence your program with our OAP first. We request all volunteers to start on this program as it is a very supportive, structured team environment and is the best possible introduction into the country and culture. After completing your team program (OAP) and achieving your team goals, the transition into the OSP becomes very simple. Most volunteers love having the opportunity to work independently after working in a group environment for 5-10 weeks. In most cases, there will be other volunteers joining you on your OSP so you won't be alone, you will just get the opportunity to select placements that you feel passionate about and create your own journey.

Please contact our office to receive the prices for combined programs.

You are welcome to stay on after your program completes and continue travelling through the country. If you would like to return to your village and project, you will need to gain approval from Word Youth International Australia before returning which is generally no problem.

World Youth International is a not-for-profit, non-government organisation and charges fees to participate on our programs. If you have specialized skills or qualifications and do not wish to pay for an overseas program, we would recommend that you visit the Government funded organisation, Australian Volunteers International (AVI). World Youth International does not require formal qualifications to participate on our programs unlike AVI which are looking for specific qualifications and skill bases. Volunteering with us allows you to have a comprehensive overseas experience allowing you to experience all aspects of volunteering. It is an opportunity to experience the world of volunteering in a supportive, structured manner.

Program fees cover your in-country expenses and do not cover your airfares or travel insurance; this is an additional expense that you will need to budget for.

Overseas Action Program - All in-country expenses are covered, there are no hidden expenses (see program brochure for further details). You will need to allow for personal toiletries, souvenirs and snacks outside of meal times.
Overseas Service Program - Inclusions/Exclusions do vary from country to country but most expenses are covered (see program brochure for further details).

All donations towards WYI are tax deductible and most donations towards your program fee are also tax deductible. However, the program fee that you pay direct to World Youth International is not tax deductible as you are receiving a service for your money.

Many, in fact most of our volunteers choose to fundraise part or all of their program and apply for kits with World Youth International (WYI). It's important to note though that there are some steps that need to be taken prior to these kits being issued.

There are a number of tax rulings that need to be abided by and information on these rulings are included in your pack. However, you will first need to apply for a program and pay your application fee which is $55. We need to interview you to ensure you are suitable for a program and you need to be sure that a World Youth volunteer program is right for you.

Once you have been interviewed, you will be given 2 weeks to consider your options and confirm your program. To confirm a program, we require a deposit of $550 which comes off your total program fee. Once your deposit has been received, you will be sent out a pre-departure kit which will include a fundraising application form. You must complete this form and list how you intend to raise the necessary funds and this must be approved by WYI. Once approved, WYI will then send you out your fundraising kit which includes a tax deductible receipt book.

In accordance with government rulings and WYI policy, kits cannot be issued prior to receipt of deposit. WYI must account for each receipt book and track all donations and payments at the end of each financial year so we are quite strict around how we distribute our receipt books. If you have paid your deposit, you can be held accountable for your activities however if you are issued receipt books without signing up to a program, it will be almost impossible to hold you accountable.

The good news is that once you have received your fundraising kit, you can fundraise your entire program fee including your initial deposit of $550. All donations must come through our fundraising account and the funds will be transferred back to you prior to your departure. You may also choose to fundraise additional funds which can be used on projects during your program.

Once you have been interviewed and accepted for your program, you will be given 2 weeks to pay your deposit of $550 which comes off your total program fee. You will then be invoiced equal monthly instalments with your final payment due no less than 2 months prior to departure. If you choose to pay your entire program fee upfront, you will receive a discount of 5%.

Intent of cancellation of your program is to be made in writing to WYI. From the time of making your deposit payment and up until 60 days prior to the commencement of the program, your initial deposit of $550 is non-refundable. Cancellation within 60 days prior to the commencement of the program incurs an additional fee, making a total of $1000 non-refundable. Once you have commenced your program, no refunds are available if you decide to cancel.
If you can no longer participate on your nominated date of travel we will allow you to change your program date up to 3 times within an 18 month period. If this change occurs prior to your 60 program commencement date, no fee will be charged by WYI. If a date change is requested by you within the 60 day period, then you will be required to pay a late change fee of $500 which will be added to your total program fee.
Requests for a program date change must be made in writing and must clearly outline the reasons for the request. Your monthly instalment payments will be adjusted to reflect the new dates and must continue to be paid in order to demonstrate your commitment to taking part on a WYI program. Failure to continue payments will first result in late fees being applied and then the possibility of the above cancellation policy taking effect.

If you are participating on the Overseas Service Teaching Program which includes a TESOL training program, different cancellation fees apply. Please contact our office for further details.

WYI recommends STA Travel as our preferred Travel Agent. STA can offer a range of competitive fares including student fares that will take the worry out of planning your overseas adventure. World Youth International has briefed STA extensively on our preferred travel routes which will ultimately save you money. STA recommends Covermore Travel Insurance which is one of Australia's leading insurance companies. If you book with STA, you will receive 10% discount on your travel insurance policy.
Mr Stuart Darnley is our representative and he can be reached on 03 9882 0611. Alternatively, email him at bsm.camberwell@branch.statravel.com.au to start your booking procedures. Most travel arrangements can be handled online but if you are located in Melbourne, be sure to drop into their office located at 558 Burke Road, Camberwell.
There are 3 key reasons why we ask you to book with Stuart at STA's Camberwell office. Firstly, he is aware of our needs and can offer you competitive rates. Secondly, he can access databases and place you on the same flights as members from your group. Lastly, if you become ill or need to change your flights and require our assistance, we would be much happier dealing with an agent we know. This means quicker results with far less stress!

Overseas Action Program - Where possible, we strongly recommend that you DO NOT travel with your partner on this program. The reasons for this advice is varied and we would suggest that you contact our office direct to learn more about the challenges that volunteers in a relationship face on this program. Where possible, we try to enrol couples to participate on our Overseas Service Program as it is far more accommodating for couples. If we have discussed the challenges at length with you and our decision is to allow you both to join our Overseas Action Program (which does occur), there are strict policies around how you will be managed. For example, couples are not permitted to share the same room during their program or show public affection in the communities. It is often frowned upon by local communities when they discover that volunteers are in relationship, but not actually married.

Overseas Service Program - We have always opened this program to people in relationship as we believe that travelling with a partner creates a solid support structure allowing you to often achieve greater results. We guarantee that you will be placed together in the same village and where possible, in the same placements if this is your wish.

Absolutely! You may travel with friends on any of our programs. We will ensure that you are placed in the same village and in the same accommodation. Having friends to travel with creates a great supportive environment.

Over the years, we have created programs for many families who have travelled, worked and lived together for 1 to 6 months. Their experiences have been life changing and have created amazing family bonds. Children must be 10 years of age or older to travel on our programs due to health, hygiene and safety concerns in developing countries. Special family rates are offered so be sure to ask one of our staff about our packages.

Overseas Action Program - Regretfully, visitors are not permitted to visit you during your program. This is a strict policy enforced by World Youth International. Friends and family may arrange to meet with you at the end of your program and you can travel back to the communities you lived in as a visitor.

Overseas Service Program - Visitors are permitted on this program. All visitors must first register their interest with World Youth International at least 2 months prior to departure. Visitors are welcome to visit your village, accommodation and placements. Visitors are not permitted to volunteer their time or stay in your accommodation for more than 48 hours. You are welcome to take a break with your visitor and do some touring. All visitors must undergo a screening process with World Youth International prior to being approved. Visitors will be required to submit a national police clearance certificate prior to be permitted to visit the village.

Travelling overseas is often half the journey. The challenge of returning home is often tougher than the challenge of being in the country. Reverse culture shock can take effect and challenge your day to day activities. We understand the importance of providing support upon return and have included a comprehensive program for our volunteers.

Your program fee covers an all inclusive 4 day live in training held annually in Adelaide. The Personal Empowerment Program brings together like minded inspiring people from all over Australia to experience an exceptional self development leadership program. It focuses on debriefing your overseas experience, looking at your leadership style and how to best utilize it in today's society and ways to support local community initiatives.

In each capital city, World Youth International hosts a Step Out' team. These teams are filled with like minded people who have experienced our overseas programs and want to continue contributing to communities both overseas and locally. Teams meet monthly and engage in a range of activities (predominantly social) and enjoy being around like minded people.

Volunteers often remain in contact through our social network pages and attending our fundraising events. There is always something you can become involved with upon returning from your overseas adventure.

Unfortunately, we do not offer programs for minors. If you are interested in joining our programs, you can apply while you are a minor and start the application/preparation process. We often have 16/17 year old students enrol 12-18 months in advance for a volunteer program which is completely acceptable. You must be 18 prior to the program commencement date. It is not permitted for you to be 17 at the start date of the program.

Often, volunteers are unsure about World Youth International because of our name. Volunteers often believe that we only offer programs to youth and that we are only a youth organisation. This is not correct, World Youth International offers programs for people of all ages and we regularly cater for the over 50's market. Mature age travellers who have spent their entire lives taking care of everyone else often call us saying it's time I did something for me! I have my own dreams that I wish to fulfill in this life and there's no time like the present! We are inspired by these volunteers who join our organisation and welcome you with open arms!

With all programs, you are required to arrange your own flights to your nominated destination. Upon arrival, a WYI representative will meet you at the airport and care for you. If you book through STA Camberwell, there is a likely chance that you will be placed on the same flight as your peers and that you will be given their contact details so you can chat and make arrangements to meet prior to departure. For this reason, we strongly recommend you book through our preferred travel agent.

We look at each situation on a case by case scenario. In most cases, we allow volunteers to travel with an anxiety disorder providing we have a medical clearance from your GP. We aim to support you to the best of our ability but we need to ensure that you are aware of the challenges you will encounter in your destination and that you are prepared for them. Extra time and care is spent during the interview process and lead up to your departure.

All volunteers are required to have a national police clearance which is a screening process. It will provide World Youth International with an overview of the last 10 years of your life and any criminal records will be carefully scrutinized.

Prior to your application, you will be asked if you have a criminal record. Police clearances must be submitted to our office at least 2 months prior to departure and volunteers may be refused a placement if there are serious matters of concern relating to theft, burglary, drugs, violence or child related matters that have not been disclosed. If you are unsure about your suitability, be sure to contact one of our staff members prior to applying for your position.

Many volunteers come home with a thirst to continue travelling and volunteering. WYI offers two intakes per year for Team Leaders and Assistant Team Leaders. Positions are advertised on our website and through our Facebook pages. You will be required to submit a lengthy application and if suitable, sit for 2 interviews. Applicants from all over Australia will be considered. If selected, volunteers will undergo a 3 month training program and be required to travel to Adelaide for a 2 day intensive group training.

Step Out Australia is a great way to meet with past volunteers and contribute something meaningful to local and international communities. If you would like to become involved, simply contact our office or click on the Step Out pages on our website.
