| | | Our Current Projects | | Early Childhood Development Centre
Completed in 2010, our Early Childhood Development Centre provides care for approximately 80 young children from the age of three through to six. The Centre prepares the children for nursery and primary school taking care of their educational needs in the very early years.Child Development Centre This centre will cater for up to 50 most vulnerable children within our village. These children will be aged from three years to six years and will be nurtured and educated within the facility. During this time a program will exist between the CDC and the family to maintain contact and develop coping mechanisms for both child and family so that re-introduction of the child back into the family will be possible at the end of the three year period or less depending on the circumstances. If the child is an orphan, a program will be put in place with the extended family. There are no sponsors for our children, in fact, it will be the community projects that will sustain the Child Rescue Centre. Our Shamba (vegetable garden) provides food for them along with an income from sales of the surplus vegetables, our fish ponds will produce and income, our chickens again will provide food and eggs along with sales of the products and every project that exists will produce an ongoing income to support each and every project, making Odede a Sustainable Community. Odede Men's Group This group commenced in April 2011 and is growing in numbers rapidly. The Men's Group is focusing predominantly on sustainable crops ie. Tissue Culture Bananas, Greengrams, Passionfruit, Grafted Fruits ie Paw Paw, Mangoes and a Green House. Their funds of 20Ksh per week will go towards a Community Green House. The cost of a Green House, complete with watering system and seeds is 220,000Ksh. Once half has been saved our plan is to find a donor for the remaining half. This money will be repaid to the Community Cooperative Bank by way of product / funds. This money will then be reinvested back into the community for further projects. (A Sustainable Project)Opportunities of Involvement
- Donation of Funds to assist in the construction of Green House
- Purchase of Seeds
- Solar Drier for Tissue Culture Bananas
- Packaging / Labelling for Dried Banana Chips
- And any sustainable project suggested by a volunteer.
Odede Youth Group The focus on this program led by Alex Omino is to empower youth.Twenty young people were selected and given intensive training in T.O.T. (Train the Trainees). Points covered included what are their strengths? What are the challenges they have in their lives? What opportunities have they had and what THREATS were there that affected their opportunities if not achieved. As well, they are being exposed to the outside world to places such as Red Cross (voluntarily work), Blue Cross (withdrawal from drugs) and Green Cross (environmental). The youth are encouraged take on an Individual Project from start to finish in what is called Building Opportunities for them. They explore what resources are out there and expose them and allow them to make the choice as to what area they want to explore. Areas such as Disabled, I.T, Retail, Agriculture, Livestock, Sport, Health, Counselling and so on. The focus being to allow them to pursue their interests and build on that. Since the commencement of the Odede Youth Group, funding has been provided by the Bondo County Council for the Odede youth to put in a road through the Odede community. Odede Fish Ponds
Due to Lake Victoria not having a sustainable fish supply, fishermen in Odede have lost their livelihood. We currently have two very successful ponds working and the first pond is due to harvest in August 2011. The fish that are grown are the local variety of Tilapia. A pond of 500 fish will yield 150,000Ksh. The ponds are initiated by a donor at a cost of approximately AUD750 including food for 6 months. Each pond is managed by a Fisherman for the period of time (approx. 6 - 8 months) of which he will then receive 80% of the yield and the remaining 20% is given to the Child Rescue Centre. The 80% will be sufficient funds to enable the fisherman to commence his own fishpond, two, if he is particularly smart. The pond is re stocked and will now be owned and managed by the Community Cooperative whereby full yield will go to support the Child Rescue Centre. The aim is to construct up to 6 ponds, grow the fish to market size within a 6 month period which will enable a yield on a monthly basis. These funds will assist in paying the wages and feeding our children. (A Sustainable Project) Opportunities for Involvement
- Donation of Funds for a Community Fish Pond - approx. AUD750
- Donation of Water Pipes
- Donation of Netting
Happy Goat Project This project was initiated by a donation of goats by B1G1. The Goat House and compound has been constructed by World Youth Volunteers in June/July 2011. The compound will consist of four pens, each having 25 goats. Two pure bred Saanen does and 23 local goats. The project will also have four pure bred Saanen bucks and we will then commence a breeding program. Each group will have a period of two years to breed and at the completion of that time frame, each group will take 50% of the kids born and the remainder will remain to grow the herd for the Community Goat Cooperative. This will enable each group to start their own goat farm and enable another group of 20 women to commence the next program. An income will initially be generated by the sales of goats milk and goats meat. The future will be focused on by products of goats milk, ie. soap, cheese, yoghurt.
This project will also assist in the support of the Community Co-op. Opportunities for Involvement
- Funds for construction of Goat Houses within the community
- Funds for development of Production Industry
- Irrigation materials
- Solar Wheelbarrow for water supply - approx. AUD700
- Water tank/s
- Purchase of Numayunga (a motorbike with trailer for transport of goats etc.) AUD2,500
Odede Medical Clinic Our next project to be constructed is our wonderful Medical Clinic. World Youth International has commenced collecting funds for this structure. Dependent on funds, our clinic will commence early 2012. This will be an amazing facility as it will offer a four bed overnight ward, consulting rooms, laboratory, two labour wards, reception and offices, observation room, laundry and kitchen.Odede is currently setting up a temporary clinic within the village so as to commence medical treatment for the community which is greatly needed. Funds for the set up of this clinic has been donated by volunteer donations however the drugs and wages of staff are supplied by the contribution of the Women's Group. We will commence with one full time nurse with one assistant nurse. As the women's group grows, so will the funds collected which in turn will provide funds to perhaps employ a doctor once per week or month, this makes the clinic SUSTAINABLE. Our aim for the future is to develop a Health Fund so that every family will have access to medical treatment at an affordable cost. Opportunities of Involvement
- Contribution of funds to purchase equipment etc. for clinic.
- In-person support at clinics. (nurses, doctors etc though our Oveseas Service Program)
- Educational support for medical seminars for women.
Community Vehicle Due to the remote area in which Odede is situated, access to hospitals and clinics are extremely difficult. The closest clinic is approximately 8kms at a cost of 200Ksh by a Mitatoo and then a motor bike. Hence seeking medical treatment is almost non existent. There have been many deaths over the years purely because of distance and cost. The vehicle most appropriate would be a 4 x wheel drive diesel for longevity and ease of access to the inner most areas of the village. This vehicle could be utilised in the following ways.
- Community Ambulance
- Mobile Clinic
- Community Hire Vehicle
- Volunteer Hire Vehicle
To date, we have had a generous donation of AUD10,000 and the approximate cost can range from AUD15,000 - AUD25,000. This vehicle will be imported from Dubai as this is the most cost effective way and to be sure of the condition of the vehicle. Opportunities of Involvement
- Donation towards purchase of vehicle.
- Sign Writing for Vehicle
- Uniform for Driver/s
- Roof Rack for Vehicle
- Cleaning equipment
