Between China and India, in
the midst of the magnificent Himalayas, lies a country rich with history
and culture. Nepal plays host to eight of the world's tallest peaks and
a wide range of landscape and vegetation from subtropical jungle to
mountainous regions. In a testament to the nature of the Nepali people,
Buddhism and Hinduism exist harmoniously together, and the result is
some of the most welcoming and friendly people in the world. Although
the beauty, culture and spiritual heritage is prosperous, Nepal faces
harsh developmental problems. With a lack of means to export its limited
natural resources and a tumultuous political history, Nepal is an
economically and politically disadvantaged country. A large proportion
of the population lives in poverty despite the ingenuity of the Nepalese
people.
Overseas Action Program Nepal
In Nepal you will fall in
love with the slow-paced village life, the generous people and the
distant view of snow-capped peaks. You will live with a traditional
Nepali family - a rare and unique opportunity guaranteed to truly
immerse you in Nepali culture. The program is for 18 - 30 year olds and
runs for between 5 - 10 weeks with a professionally trained Australian
Team Leader. You will work in a very hands on role, building sustainable
structures in rural villages while you live and play with the local
community! There is no need for any previous construction skills as we
work hand in hand with local labourers - all you need is passion, and a
commitment to give it a go and get your hands dirty. Your construction
project will build a structure which the community desperately needs, in
the areas of Primary Health Care, Income Generation and Education &
Training. Individually, you will also have the opportunity to work
within a community in an area you are passionate about such as
education, or in an orphanage or street kids home. And, at the end of
the program, you will have the chance to embark on a trek through the
Himalayas, plus a white water rafting trip!
