A tumultuous political
history and high levels of corruption in the Peruvian government have
contributed to extreme poverty and inequality for indigenous people in
rural areas. About 73 per cent of the indigenous Quechua and Aymara
communities, which is more than 5 million people, live below the poverty
line. This is in stark contrast to the highly developed city life in
Peru, a beautiful country which boasts some of the most spectacular
scenery in South America. Known for its lost civilizations and
mysterious ancient cultures, discovering Peru is truly like taking a
step back in history. Hike the Inca trail, explore the lost city of
Machu Picchu, trek through the Andes or take it easy on Lake Titicaca -
the adventures are endless.
Overseas Action Program Peru
Peru's mystical beauty and
intriguing history provides a magical backdrop for our OA program, and
is a great way to experience the wonders of South America. The program
is for 18 - 30 year olds and runs for between 5 - 10 weeks with a
professionally trained Australian Team Leader. You will work in a very
hands on role, building sustainable structures in rural villages while
you live and play with the local community! There is no need for any
previous construction skills as we work hand in hand with local
labourers - all you need is passion, and a commitment to give it a go
and get your hands dirty. Your construction project will build a
structure which the community desperately needs, in the areas of Primary
Health Care, Income Generation and Education & Training.
Individually, you will also have the opportunity to work within a
community in an area you are passionate about such as education, or in
an orphanage or street kids home. And, at the end of the program, you
will have the chance to trek the Inca Trail!
What else do I need to know?
