Past Projects Cambodia

Here are some of the projects that our volunteers have completed as part of the WYI Overseas Action Programs (OA). The OAP is a team program for 18 - 30 year olds which focuses on community development. Each project aims to build a structure which the community desperately needs, in the areas of Primary Health Care, Income Generation and Education & Training.

Multi-Functional Classroom

Project: Classroom
Where: Just outside of Siem Reap, Cambodia
Lasting impact: Increased education opportunities

This January, World Youth International launched its very first program in Cambodia! We partnered with local organisation This Life Cambodia and a team of 12 embarked on an incredible adventure for 5 weeks.

In 2009, 30 years after the Khmer Rouge rule, Cambodia still struggles to provide basic education for its people, especially in rural and remote areas. As modern education has progressed slowly in Cambodia, there is a severe shortage of schools and classrooms, particularly in rural areas, which limits children's access to basic education. Poverty forces children to forgo schooling to support their families and a staggering 53.7% of Siem Reap's population lives below the poverty line.

In January 2009, the WYI Overseas Action Program participants built a multi-function classroom in a rural village nearby to Siem Reap to help address the lack of educational facilities. The multifunctional classroom will be used as a computer room/tutoring room (for private time and for students falling behind at government school) and as a program room for an up and coming income generation program. The OA group also installed solar panels to allow for power to computers for the future.
