Rang'i Community Care Centre Kenya

Children's dorms at completion of construction 2005

The Rang'i Community Care Centre is situated in the Sori area of Homa-Bay, Kenya

Background:
As a church minister, Apostle Joel Otuoma came face to face with the suffering of many people and the impact that HIV/AIDS has had on the lives on the people in the Rang'i Community. The challenges brought about by the spiralling poverty levels, the lack of education and changing environmental conditions was overbearing for Joel and his family and even as far back as 1990, he knew he had to do something about it.

Over the following years, Joel met with the elders of the community and together they put together a plan that would provide healthcare facilities for the community, accommodation for orphan children and formal and non-formal education.

Apostle Joel formed a relationship with the staff of World Youth International Australia during the establishment of the Owiti Children's Home in Nyamasaria. It was then agreed by the Directors of WYI that support would be given to Apostle Joel and members of the Rang'i Community to construct the Rang'l Community Care Centre.

The well has been built to supply clean water to the Community.

Vision of the Centre

To enhance a healthy and compassionate society for all, in particular, the vulnerable of the community.

Mission Statement

To support the most disadvantaged including the orphan children and widows affected by the HIV/AID virus, through addressing their material, physical and spiritual needs.

Objectives of the Centre

  • Provide orphan children with basic services including shelter, water, food, cleanliness, clothes and other sources of livelihood.
  • Provide holistic comprehensive health care and support services for the orphan children and widows.
  • Provide formal and non-formal education and vocational training for life skills development.
  • Facilitate agricultural development through crops and livestock for food security.
  • Promote Christian values and spiritual nourishment through bible teachings, guidance and counselling.

There is a lack of orphan support centres within the region. A high death rate exists particularly effecting women during delivery stages of childbirth and children in their early stages of life.

The Centre now comprises dormitories for orphan boys and girls plus a kitchen, dining room and study hall. Still to be completed are the medical clinic, pharmacy, nurses and staff quarters.

To make the centre self sufficient and not dependent upon welfare, WYI has created income generating project which include:

  • Dairy
  • Poultry farm
  • Posho Mill (Molly's Mill)
  • Agricultural development
