World Youth International is based in South Australia and has affiliates in many countries around the world. These bases are staffed by people who share a commitment to world peace through understanding and exchange.

We acknowledge all people, holding none above the other. We focus on those elements that we share in common rather than those that separate us and we acknowledge the spiritual essence of mankind. Together we believe we can help build a brighter and better future for young people throughout the world.

We envisage a world in which young people grow up confident in themselves and their abilities, with high self esteem, courage and passion for their lives and the lives of all humanity. A world in which young people live in a supportive and harmonious environment receiving educational opportunities and share in a commitment to a safe, clean and sustainable future for our planet.

History - How World Youth International Began

In 1988 Robert Hoey, a 21 year old man from Adelaide, Australia had a dream. After spending several years working with different development programs and organisations, Robert saw a need to provide young Australians with an opportunity to become involved in a program offering support and the opportunity to travel overseas. From such projects Robert felt sure that the participating young people would gain numerous skills and knowledge not easily developed elsewhere.

Unlike many people who do nothing with their good ideas, Robert took a further step and founded the non-profit organisation World Youth International.

Robert's ability to act as a spokes person and role model for young people was also identified by an American Youth Organisation, Global Discovery, who invited him to accompany them to Russia for three months to work on rehabilitation programs with young people affected by the Chernobyl disaster.

Upon his return to Australia, one of the first projects the newly formed World Youth International engaged in was a fundraising activity to financially support 15 Russian teenagers in coming to Australia for a three month cultural exchange program.

Forty committed teenagers raised over $24,000 by gaining sponsorship to ride their pushbikes between Melbourne and Sydney and Sydney to Melbourne. Aside from some corporate sponsorship towards food for the teenagers on the bike ride all monies raised were derived from the project participants commitment, motivation, desire to meet a challenge and willingness to reach out a hand of friendship to other teenagers across the world. Bike rides were held in subsequent years from Sydney to Melbourne and Adelaide to Melbourne. These rides provided Australian young people with an opportunity to challenge themselves emotionally, physically and mentally and grow hugely from the experience.

The teenagers on this project were unique and yet the qualities they shared were not. We have worked with thousands of people over the years that have responded well to the challenge of becoming involved in projects and activities that are bigger than anything they would normally create for themselves. From such involvement these participants have often found a new sense of self-confidence and motivation, and a place to demonstrate to themselves and others, what they are capable of under what are often challenging conditions.

Since 1988 World Youth International has provided many opportunities for thousands of young people and adults from around the world.

World Youth International Founder:

Robert Hoey, born 1967- passed on 1996

How World Youth International Works

In 2002 World Youth International created the World Youth International Benevolent Trust. The organisation is the Trustee of the Trust, and is responsible for maintaining the fund and assuring that all funds received are used for the Principal Purpose being:

  • to provide aid for the relief of people suffering poverty, distress, misfortune and helplessness in countries declared by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, as developing countries.

A Management Committee for the Trust has been established and directs the Trustee in the management and operations of the Trust. The Committee consists of a chairperson, secretary, treasurer and other members.

In February 2004, World Youth International's Board formally adopted its new Development Philosophy. This has given clarity to the future direction of the organisation with a greater focuses on working with communities in the area of development, rather than welfare. We believe this will allow people to take more control over their own lives and improve their future.

International Partnership

WYI has established WYI Nepal and WYI Kenya as partner non government organisations to WYI Australia. Both of these NGO's are self governing but work together with WYI Australia in creating sustainable community development projects. Field offices are also set up in other countries allowing our development programs and projects to work effectively.

Financial Disbursements

World Youth International is a registered non-profit charitable organisation and has all financial records audited each twelve months.

One of the qualities which makes us significantly different from other exchange organisations is that any 'profit' made at the end of each year goes towards funding our community development projects overseas. An example of this is the school and orphanage WYI has built in the community of Gokarna in Nepal.

We deliberately choose to keep our overheads as low as possible to maximize the amount of money left after expenses to go towards our overseas projects in developing countries.

World Youth International receives no external funding and relies on the generosity of people throughout the world for its work to continue. Being a non-profit organisation, any funds that are available from our programs go to making a difference to people's lives somewhere in the world.

Volunteer in Kenya

Kenya is known for its stunning landscape, unique wildlife and diverse cultural heritage. But this beauty contrasts sharply with the country's high levels of poverty, violence, homelessness and disease, especially HIV/AIDS. Most Kenyans live below the poverty line of $1 a day and droughts frequently put millions of people at risk. Nevertheless, the unwavering spirit of the African people shines through in their passion for music, dance and art. Today, Kenya is the ultimate destination for adventure travel in Africa. It is one of the finest safari destinations in the world, and the magical character of the country entices travellers to return time after time.

Safari of the Soul Program

There comes a time when many of us look for something new to challenge us, something we can be part of along with other women which makes a positive difference to other people's lives. An experience that includes travel, adventure, meeting other like minded women and contributing to communities in need.

Safari of the Soul is the ultimate experience for women between the age of 40 - 60 who are looking for more than just a holiday. This program is for women who want a purposeful experience, to reconnect with what's really important and support the good work of World Youth International. Run over a 3 week period in August each year, you'll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in Kenyan culture while making a difference to people's lives. This jam packed adventure will take you to the heartland of western Kenya where you will share accommodation with the local children, interact with the women and work on sustainable community development projects.

Nurses in Action

World Youth International has been working in Kenya since 1992 and has sent thousands of volunteers to live and work in western Kenya. Each year, WYI sends across dozens of health care professionals to lend a hand to under resourced medical clinics and hospitals. In 2009, WYI launched our first medical camp which provided free medical care and drugs to over 300 people in a community that had no access to medical facilities. The first camp was such an amazing success that WYI committed to running regular camps to other isolated districts on an ongoing basis. With a dedicated focus on community health, WYI is about to open a Level 4 Community Hospital in the village of Odede that will provide subsidized health care to hundreds of people.

Nurses in Action is for health professionals who would like to continue the good work of World Youth International while having a direct impact on a local community. This program will stretch you mentally and physically on a daily basis. This is a direct impact program that is not for the faint hearted! Due to the challenging nature of this program, we can only open it up to skilled professionals who have one of the following qualifications:

  • Allied health professionals
  • Completed 2nd year of Nursing Degree or higher
  • Registered Nurse (all areas)
  • Division 2 Nurse
  • Pharmacist
  • Social Worker
  • Aged Care
  • Qualified Pathologist
  • Qualified Midwife

Accompanied by an Australian trained Team Leader, this program will run over a 1 month period. Your team will work together on a minimum of 2 medical camps, support the community hospital in your specialized field, participate in community health training programs and support our home care program that addresses the needs of the sick and elderly.

So join us for a journey like no other and share your amazing skills with the world!

Standard Program Itinerary

Day 1
The first day of orientation will commence with a group introduction and an overview of WYI safety procedures. You will then enjoy a tour of Nairobi, tasting local cuisines and experiencing the Giraffe Park where you can hand feed the local giraffes. Day 2 - 4
You will travel overland by bus to Kisumu, through the Great Rift Valley (approximately 8 hours).

Your Team Leader will conduct your orientation program which combines cultural talks, health and safety briefings, team building activities, sightseeing packages and a general familiarization tour. They will also help you to organise a mobile phone (if required), sim card, adaptors, money, snacks and anything else you may need. Although you will be based in a remote part of Kenya, you will have mobile reception and can remain in contact with loved ones at home.

You will travel out to your village placement of Odede in the afternoon which will take approximately 2 hours. You will experience an orientation of the community where you will learn about the Odede Community Hospital, the people and your additional placement options.

Day 5 - 15
During the next ten days, you will get to work on your projects and apply your skills to support the local community. You will also begin planning your mobile medical camp which will provide free treatment for up to 300 people in a remote community. Day 19 - 26
You will continue with your placements and immerse yourself in the community. On the last day of your stay in Odede, WYI will arrange a farewell celebration so you can complete with the community and reflect upon your achievements. This is likely to be a moving and somewhat emotional experience for you.

You will transfer to Kisumu late in the afternoon and spend the night there before departing for your safari first thing in the morning.

Day 27 - 29
You will be collected by the safari company and commence your three-day Masai Mara Game Park Safari. You will travel through the Great Rift Valley and onto the Masai Mara where you will experience wildlife that will take your breath away. Each day you will head off on a different adventure to a new part of the park in search of wild African animals. Your vehicle will be an eight-seater van with a pop-top roof so you can stand up, take photos and see animals within metres of the vehicle. The evenings will be spent back at the camp, where you can share your wonderful photos and stories of the day. Your safari will complete in Nairobi on the afternoon of day 29.

You will have your final debrief and celebration dinner in Nairobi this evening. This will be a chance for you to debrief your program, reflect on your achievements and celebrate your extraordinary journey together.

Day 30
After breakfast, you will be transferred back to Nairobi International Airport for your return flight home. Alternatively, you may wish to stay on in Nairobi at your own expense.

Upon return, you may join your local Step Out group comprising of past volunteers who support local projects.

Volunteer in Nepal

Between China and India, in the midst of the magnificent Himalayas, lies a country rich with history and culture. Nepal plays host to eight of the world's tallest peaks and a wide range of landscape and vegetation from subtropical jungle to mountainous regions. In a testament to the nature of the Nepali people, Buddhism and Hinduism exist harmoniously together, and the result is some of the most welcoming and friendly people in the world. Although the beauty, culture and spiritual heritage is prosperous, Nepal faces harsh developmental problems. With a lack of means to export its limited natural resources and a tumultuous political history, Nepal is an economically and politically disadvantaged country. A large proportion of the population lives in poverty despite the ingenuity of the Nepalese people.

Overseas Action Program Nepal

In Nepal you will fall in love with the slow-paced village life, the generous people and the distant view of snow-capped peaks. You will live with a traditional Nepali family - a rare and unique opportunity guaranteed to truly immerse you in Nepali culture.  Volunteer in Peru

A tumultuous political history and high levels of corruption in the Peruvian government have contributed to extreme poverty and inequality for indigenous people in rural areas. About 73 per cent of the indigenous Quechua and Aymara communities, which is more than 5 million people, live below the poverty line. This is in stark contrast to the highly developed city life in Peru, a beautiful country which boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in South America. Known for its lost civilizations and mysterious ancient cultures, discovering Peru is truly like taking a step back in history. Hike the Inca trail, explore the lost city of Machu Picchu, trek through the Andes or take it easy on Lake Titicaca - the adventures are endless.

Overseas Action Program Peru

Peru's mystical beauty and intriguing history provides a magical backdrop for our OA program, and is a great way to experience the wonders of South America. The program is for 18 - 30 year olds and runs for between 5 - 10 weeks with a professionally trained Australian Team Leader. You will work in a very hands on role, building sustainable structures in rural villages while you live and play with the local community! Volunteer in Cambodia

Plagued by recent history of war and genocide, Cambodia is one of the world's least developed countries. Although the country has sustained considerable peace and stability over the last decade, they are still facing the formidable challenge of rebuilding social, political and economic institutions. Cambodia plays host to the spectacular Angkor-Wat temples, breathtaking countryside, magnificent beaches and some of the friendliest people in the world. The magical beauty of the landscape, culture and people has made this South East Asian destination immensely popular for tourists.

Overseas Action Program Cambodia

Travelling through Cambodia provokes a rollercoaster of emotions - the amazement of Angkor Wat, one of the world's greatest achievements; but also the darkness and despair of the reality of war. The program is for 18 - 30 year olds and runs for between 5 - 10 weeks with a professionally trained Australian Team Leader. You will work in a very hands on role, building sustainable structures in rural villages while you live and play with the local community! There is no need for any previous construction skills as we work hand in hand with local labourers - all you need is passion, and a commitment to give it a go and get your hands dirty. Your construction project will build a structure which the community desperately needs, in the areas of Primary Health Care, Income Generation and Education & Training. Individually, you will also have the opportunity to work within a community in an area you are passionate about such as education, or in an orphanage or street kids home.

Overseas Service Program Kenya

The OSP accepts participants 18 years and over. WYI works with you to create an individual volunteer placement in Kenya for placements between 1 to 6 months in duration. The need for volunteers in Kenya is overwhelming and the work will be challenging, however you will feel incredibly rewarded once you see the difference you have made to the communities.

Placement options are available in the following areas:

OSP professional placements - Especially Nursing or other Healthcare based professions. As a trained professional, you can really use your skills to make a difference in a developing country, and the experience is invaluable.

OSP teaching placements - If you are a qualified teacher, we can place you straight into a hands-on role. We also accept non qualified teachers for this program and we provide you with a TESOL training program.

OSP general placements - If you would like to make a meaningful contribution in a developing country, but you are not exactly sure how, then this placement is for you. There are many different placement options available including orphanage support, street children programs, health and sanitation projects, education, and support for community and women's groups.

Overseas Service Program Peru

The OSP is for any age over 18, and WYI will work with you to create an individual volunteer placement in Peru. You can travel for up to 6 months, and the departure dates are flexible. There are many placement options you can choose from, in the following areas:

OSP professional placements - As a trained professional, you can really use your skills to make a difference in a developing country, and the experience is invaluable.

Volunteer in Uganda

Uganda is a lush and fertile country, landlocked in the heart of Africa between Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Sudan and Rwanda. The landscape is remarkably diverse and includes snow-capped mountains, volcanos, dense tropical forests and breathtaking waterfalls. Uganda is also the home of the mountain gorillas and the second largest fresh water lake in the world, Lake Victoria. Despite all this, Uganda remains one of the poorest countries in the world with a very high rate of HIV/Aids. The median age is just 15 years old and the Aids epidemic has cause hundreds of thousands of children to become orphaned. The need for volunteers in Uganda is huge, and there are many opportunities to make a difference with World Youth International.

Please note:

WYI's volunteer placements in India are a different structure from our individual volunteer placements (OSP - Overseas Service Project) in other countries Kenya, Uganda and Peru. This is because in India, WYI is partnered with a local non-government organisation IDEX (Indian Network for Development Exchange).

IDEX has been working in India for 7 years and partners with organisations such as WYI, all over the world. The India volunteer placements are much more supported placement than WYI's other OSP, and are generally suited for volunteers who DO NOT have any specific skills they wish to use.

For more information please contact WYI's Overseas Service Project Manager Alison Wells via email or phone the office on (08) 8340 1266.

Child Sponsorship

Sponsor a child today and change a life forever!

Millions of children throughout the world need help to survive. For these children, even fundamental human rights such as access to food, clean water, medical care and education is a daily struggle. The greatest gift we can give them is not money, but the opportunity to empower themselves. YOU can empower these children TODAY through World Youth International's sponsorship program.

Children are waiting to be sponsored NOW!

Sponsor a Child in Nepal | read more

Sponsoring a child in Nepal via WYI ensures their development through education, basic health and income generation. The child receives a scholarship to attend school, and the fee also ensures they have regular meals, a school uniform and school books. When a child receives a scholarship to attend our school, it is for a three year period. The child's performance and commitment is then assessed by the school management committee. If it is satisfactory, a further three year scholarship is provided. You can also choose to sponsor a child to live in WYI's Sapana Dreaming Children's Home which provides shelter, education, health care and a loving environment for up to 50 orphaned children.

Sponsor a Child in Kenya | read more

Sponsoring a orphaned child in Kenya allows them to live in a healthy and safe environment at the WYI Owiti Children's Home. Here it is ensured that the child has regular meals, clean water to drink, access to adequate medical facilities and also can attend school with uniforms and books provided. The sponsored child is selected by members of WYI overseas staff and the community, in accordance with our established selection criteria.

What you receive from World Youth International

WYI provides you with a photo and details of your sponsored child, regular letters/drawings from the child as well as newsletters and updates on our organisation. In return we ask you to supply a family photo and personal details. We encourage regular communication between you and your child but ask that you do not send gifts because of our development policy. You are openly invited to visit your sponsor child but permission must be obtained in advance from WYI. A visiting sponsor must be accompanied by a WYI staff person and is not permitted to visit the child's home or spend time with the child unsupervised.

Where to from here?

To sponsor a child in either Kenya or Nepal please follow the links below to take the next step.

Step Out Australia

Step Out Australia - WYI National Volunteer Program

Step Out Australia is an exciting outlet for people interested in making positive change in this world from right here in Australia!

South Australia

Queensland

Don't have the time/funds to volunteer overseas? Then why not volunteer from your own home! WYI has groups of people in each state of Australia who are the drivers of WYI's fundraising, promotional and campaigning activities. These teams are run by passionate and motivated people who are willing to STEP OUT of their comfort zones to help people STEP OUT of poverty. They meet regularly to discuss and take action on global issues of poverty and injustice, and to share their own stories with each other.

Since its inception in 2009, Step Out has raised almost $60,000 for much needed projects in Kenya, Nepal and Cambodia all through grass roots community events and teams have had an absolute blast doing so. From Halloween boat cruises to staging week long art exhibitions, our Step Out teams are always creating new and exciting ways to unite the local and global community and make a stance for positive change.

Step out is not just about fundraising however, one of its prime reason for creation was to bring together like-minded and passionate people and create supportive networks all across Australia. So if you have ever been overseas and returned home to that dreaded "reverse entry culture shock", or perhaps never travelled at all but would like to mingle with really friendly people and learn from others experiences then we invite you to please get involved.
